Early Life and Childhood

Don Jazzy’s real name is Michael Collins Ajereh. He was born on the 26th of November 1982 at Umuahia, Abia State. While his mother is a princess from a village in Abia State, his father is an Isoko man from Delta State.

During his early years, the family decided to move to Lagos in search of greener pastures. They settled at Ajegunle, a part of Lagos regarded as the “main” Ghetto in the state. This same place has produced famous Nigerian top music stars like the duo known as Danfo Drivers.

Growing up, Jazzy had his primary education in this part of Lagos State. He obtained his secondary school education at Federal Government College, Lagos. From an early stage, Michael Ajereh picked interest in music. He observed the differences between song rhythms, sounds and so on.

It wasn’t long before he started practising how to play the local music drums in Nigeria, alongside other musical instruments like the bass guitar. At the age of 12, he could comfortably play the guitar, the drums (traditional drums) and other musical instruments.

Education

After his graduation from Federal Government College where he had his secondary school education, He got an admission at Ambrose Alli University, located at Ekpoma in Edo State.

There he studied Business Management Studies. While he was still in school, his passion for music kept on growing. He practised and played more musical instruments.

Early in 2000, his uncle invited him to London. While staying with this uncle of his, he played the drums for a church. He later got an employment as a security guard at McDonald’s. It was at this point in time he met the lies of JJC, D’banj, Solek and The 419 Squad.

He also met the music producer at O-Town record, Emeka Infiniti from whom he learnt music production. A few years later Don Jazzy returned to Nigeria alongside D’banj and several others.

In 2004, he and D’banj teamed up to set up the recording label known as Mo’Hits Records. The recording label produced some of the best songs to have been aired in Nigeria. This includes both D’banj and Wande Coal’s songs. Two Nigerian artistes that were very popular then.

For the period that Mo’Hits lasted, Michael Ajereh worked with the high and mighty in the Nigerian music industry. D’Prince, Dr SID, Sauce Kid, Iechukwu and so on. Outside the Nigerian music industry, he also worked with the lies of Jay Z, Beyonce, Kanye West and so many others. In 2012, Ajereh and D’banj started having serious issues that led to the ending of their partnership in March the same year.

The Birth Of Mavin Records

Following the breakup of the partnership between D’banj and himself, on the 7th of May, 2012, Don Jazzy announced a new music recording label called Mavin Records. The next day, May 8th 2012, the first album from the record label was released.

The album featured the artistes he signed to the label earlier. Mavin Records went on to sign Tiwa Savage and several other Nigerian music stars. From there, the label kept growing until it reached the height at which it is today.

Like Don Jazzy rightly predicted on May 7th 2012, when he said “I see Mavin Records being the powerhouse of music in Africa in the shortest possible time,” today Mavin Records has truly achieved that feat.

According to reports, the music producer is said to own a private mansion in Banana Island that costs around N150 million. He is also said to own one in Lekki that costs around N160 million.

Being the current richest musician in Nigeria, he can afford to buy almost any house that he wants both within and outside the country.
