Many young school-leavers in Nigeria who couldn’t make their mathematics papers because of some reasons or the other are always asking “what courses can someone study in the university without mathematics” and in this post, we will be providing answers to that.
Mathematics as we all know can be a nightmare to some students even though I personally believe that it is an easy subject but nevertheless, getting to understand any course can’t always be for everyone.
In Nigeria, to study most courses at the tertiary level (especially science courses) having a credit in Mathematics is compulsory but what happens when someone can’t make their mathematics papers in WASSCE or other school-leaving exams?
Well, there are two ways to go about this problem if you really want to gain admission into any higher institution of your choice in Nigeria. The first option is to retake the examination or to take another examination which you can use to combine the first one.
For example, if you couldn’t make your mathematics papers in WAEC, you can either rewrite the exams or write another supporting exam (or exams) which you can use to combine when seeking admission like NECO, GCE or NABTEB. This is the most preferred option for most people who have encountered this problem but if you don’t consider this as an option, then you will have to go for another course that doesn’t require mathematics and that brings us to the second option.
For the second option, you will have to choose a course from a list of these courses that doesn’t require you to pass mathematics to study them in Nigerian universities.
Will some of these courses requires you to get at least a D7 or E8 in WAEC or other first school-leaving exams like NECO and GCE, others don’t require mathematics at all. So depending on your case and what you got in your result, you’ll need to research more to know what any course you choose requires.
This list will also be divided into segments and these segments are science, commercial and art courses you can study in Nigeria without mathematics.
Without wasting more time, lets take a look at the list.

Science Courses That Requires Little Or No Mathematics At All
As we all know, Mathematics is the backbone of most science courses but even at that, some science courses (especially medicine related courses) require little or no mathematics at all.
However, it is important to know that some Nigerian universities may and may not require prospective students to have mathematics to study any of these courses but during the course of study, students may not undergo intense calculation and other mathematical related operations like in several other science courses.
We recommend making enquiries about in the University or polytechnic you wish to attend in order to know their JAMB and O’Level requirements for these courses.
Below is a list of courses in Nigeria that require little or no mathematics to study at tertiary level.
- Nursing
- Biology
- Zoology
- Botany
- Anatomy
- Geography
- Agriculture
- Veterinary medicine
- Fisheries and Aquaculture
- Crop Science

- Forestry
- Nutrition and dietetics
Are There Commercial Courses You Can Study Without Maths?
Well most commercial or commerce related courses require mathematics at every level, so I don’t really think there would be any Nigerian university which would admit you without making at least a credit or pass in Mathematics in you O’Level and/or UTME examinations.
If you know any commercial courses that can be studied in Nigeria without mathematics in JAMB and WAEC, you can drop them in the comment section below.
Conclusion
Mathematics still remains one of most required courses when seeking admission into any university in Nigeria and at the end passing mathematics in SSCE, NECO, JAMB and other examinations is very important because it doesn’t limit you to these courses.
